Many will know and admire Roy Lichtenstein for his vivid depiction of comic book stills throughout the Pop Art era. Through use of bold primary colours and simple lines, he created works which still seem effortlessly contemporary some 50 years later. What few know however is that Lichtenstein spent a large part of the 1990s working on a series of interiors - equally as audacious as his earlier scenes, rooms took shape thanks to his trademark stripes, blocky expanses of uniform colour and ben-day dots.
After the recent international fashion weeks, we have now learnt that large geometrics as well as stripes will be very much in vogue for the most part of 2013 – surely there could be no better template for any bold interior design projects than Lichtenstein?
The artist used his dots and stripes to add tone to his works; you obviously do not have to be as daring as this homage dressed by Jeffrey Miller but the concept can be used to add intrigue to a space. Think throws, scatter cushions and rugs.
Taken to extremes, the style certainly adds character to a space. This shower displaying the classic Missoni striped pattern not only illustrates how Pop Art can be placed in the home but also bears a striking resemblance to the BBC Test Card of the latter half of the twentieth century.
Roy Lichtenstein’s work is currently being showcased in a Retrospective at the Tate Modern - the celebrated artist’s life work in a single space is surely too appertising to miss! The exhibition is running until May 27th so do go and take a peak, we thoroughly recommend it.
