When this Victorian terrace came up for sale, Julianna and James, a young professional couple from London, jumped at the chance to buy it. Being centrally located in Islington meant the four-bedroom property’s position was ideal for them, so they put in an offer, which was accepted. However, the existing kitchen, with its beautiful views overlooking the garden, was crying out for a total redevelopment to turn it into a contemporary living space.
During the planning and design process, a bright open-plan concept, celebrating the view into the garden, was one of the couple’s key requirements, so we opted for an extension to create a large kitchen-diner. Planning permission wasn’t required, with the work covered by permitted development. However, there was a restriction on raising the roof, so we opted for an extension with a pitched roof on one side to keep the shadow impact on the neighbour’s property as low as possible.
The extension has opened up the space and allows for a seamless integration of kitchen, diner, breakfast bar and even a cosy snug area, offering a spacious room to entertain friends and family. A large window front with bi-fold doors brightens up the space and enables the couple to enjoy the view of their lush garden, whether cooking or dining. Once the extension was complete, we started with the interior design stage of the project.
The project’s design triumph is the contemporary yet traditional kitchen, featuring stylish bespoke dark blue cabinets. The brick wall has been left exposed to add an element of industrial feel, which was another one of Julianna and James’ wishes. This industrial flair is supported by the concrete kitchen countertop with its simple, yet cool wooden bar stools, serving as a spacious worktop, whilst creating a perfect bar area to enjoy a drink or two. Copper pendant ceiling lights perfectly blend with the kitchen handles and, along with other copper details throughout, cater for a warm overall ambience.
After five months, the projects was finished. The end result of our co-creation project with Julianna and James is a kitchen that not only functions very well with its ample bespoke storage solutions, but looks beautiful and reflects the couple’s personal style. This extensive transformation has given Julianna and James the heart of their future family home. “The kitchen has more detail to it and is so much better than we could have ever imagined,” says James.
