The 25m long hoarding that now wraps the exterior of the Victoria and Albert Museum, declaring a ‘new residential development at a prime cultural heritage location’, may initially come as a bit of a surprise. However, Elmgreen and Dragset’s latest installation is intended to provoke questions over the nature of cultural heritage and the future of Britain’s iconic cultural landmarks.
Upon entering the exhibition, the drama continues to unfold. Hosted in the former textile galleries, visitors receive a printed script that tells the story of a retired architect who is forced to sell his familial home and his possessions. His ‘apartment’ has been furnished with works by Elmgreen and Dragset as well as objects from the V&A’s collection. Alongside this, the script comments on issues of ageing, disappointment and alienation in today’s society. Visitors are invited to embark on their own quest to discover who this eccentric architect might be which helps to redefine the way in which art is presented and experienced.
Tomorrow is open from 1st October – 2nd January at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
